Abstract

While there are emerging studies on first-generation doctoral students, there is a dearth of studies on the experiences and challenges of Latina women enrolled in US doctoral programs. Prior studies on doctoral students have either primarily focused on first-generation status or Latina women, independently. The purpose of this paper is to provide an intersectional analysis of the ways in which gender, race, socio-economic status and first-generation status impact the doctoral student experience for Latina women. We intend to use the intersectional experiences of Latina doctoral students to challenge previous methods that utilize singular identities to understand overall experiences of graduate students.
