When physicians with different professional backgrounds diagnose a patients’ problem collaboratively, they need collaborative competences (e.g., information sharing and negotiation skills). We developed a simulation to assess and foster collaborative diagnostic reasoning skills of advanced medical students. We tested whether experts perceive the simulation as authentic to ensure construct validity and whether they outperform medical students with different levels of prior knowledge. Results of the validation study show that both students and experts experienced the simulation as highly authentic. Additionally, experts outperform medical students with low prior knowledge but not with advanced prior knowledge with respect to diagnostic accuracy, time needed to solve the case, as well as quality of the collaborative process.
