Developing a System for High-Quality Feedback to Support a Practice-Based Teacher Education

Abstract

High-quality feedback to candidates on their performance of teaching skills is a key lever to developing those teaching skills. However, developing a system for high-quality feedback within a teacher preparation program is challenging, so often candidates receive feedback that is not anchored to a common set of practices and unlikely to lead to the development of desired teaching practices. We describe the key components of a system of high-quality feedback that includes focusing on specific knowledge and skills, choosing an observation rubric, training observers, and developing explicit feedback processes. Based on findings from a qualitative study of 11 teacher preparation programs, we describe practices sites are implementing to create a system of high-quality feedback.
