Mapping Shifting Landscapes: Private Foundation and Impact Investor Investment and Activity in Education in Asia

Abstract

We present an original analysis of the scope and scale of philanthropic and hybrid actors engaged in education in Asia, operationalized as private foundations and impact investors, respectively. Through network analysis, we map the target geographies, education sector priorities, and program activities of private foundations and impact investors actively funding education in Asia, and the relationships between them.

Results are from a larger database of non-state private actors developed by the authors. Findings confirm that education initiatives are funded through a complex network of funders and implementing partners. The US and India had the largest concentration of isolated funders. India was the primary target geography to fund/implement education initiatives in Asia. Primary education was the main sub-sector of operation.
