Putting Technology to the Test: Efficacy Studies of an Adaptive System in China

Mon, April 8, 4:10 to 6:10pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine Level, Linden

Abstract

The use of adaptive learning systems has given rise to an alternative form of education. Many schools in the United States are adopting adaptive learning systems and prior efficacy studies have shown positive effects. However, the development of adaptive learning systems in Asia, especially in China, is still in early stages. The current paper reported two studies comparing the XYZ Mathematics intelligent learning system with expert teachers: one compared XYZ and teachers teaching whole classes; the second compared XYZ and teachers teaching small groups (3 students per lesson). In both contexts, students using the XYZ demonstrated significant positive learning gains over students receiving teacher instruction.
