The aim of this study was to explore the impact of a pre-freshman intervention aimed at improving mathematics placement through the provision of reading comprehension monitoring strategies. More specifically, this study examined the impact of reading comprehension monitoring on mathematics placement test scores as well as mathematics course placement. Findings show that our reading intervention significantly impacted math placement scores especially for students who entered the intervention with higher mathematics SAT scores. We also found that participants with higher mathematics SAT scores were also more likely to place out of remediation than participants in our control group. Results have important implications for mathematics faculty and institutions offering developmental education.
