How Viewing Videos of Their Own Teaching Impacts Preservice Teachers' Reflective Practice: A Study of a Reflective Cycle

Abstract

In this qualitative study, teacher candidates (TCs) recorded, viewed, annotated, and reviewed three videos of their own teaching in a reflective cycle. In this study, which is a part of a larger project, the reflective, written notes and final reflections, created by TCs, were examined and analyzed for the levels of reflection (Larrivee, 2008) exhibited. In order to acknowledge TCs’ movement toward and approximation of more complex levels of reflection, we created the concept of stretching, which is described in detail along with the research and practical applications of the findings, including a discussion of how to differentiate instruction to scaffold TCs’ reflective thinking.
