This theoretical paper will present a framework using Critical Language Awareness (CLA) and Critical Media Literacy (CML) for a socially just and culturally relevant approach to language and literacy instruction supporting Muslim English learners (ELs) in U.S. schools. While most efforts supporting ELs focus on academic English acquisition, discussion about the critical positioning of language and discourses reflecting sociopolitical contexts and ideologies is lacking in most classrooms. We suggest utilizing the CLA tools of reflection (critical literacy narratives), systematizing and explanation (societal discourse and ideology analyses through CML) and developing practice (linking CML analyses to classroom discourse and texts) to foster agency with Muslim ELs while they develop essential language and literacy practices.
