Abstract

Because of the explosion of information and communication technologies, students are more than ever exposed to a changing, global and interconnected world. In order to contribute fully to society by working on political, socio-economical and socio-cultural problems, students need to become digital citizens. The present knowledge synthesis study examines the literature on digital citizenship in a global context and proposes a comprehensive model, which includes an amalgam of the key components of digital citizenship. It also examines the relationships between young people and the digital world, the skills that are needed for an active and responsible digital citizen in a global context, and the innovative pedagogical practices that contribute to the development of global digital citizenship competencies.
