Economics and the American Myth: Hip-Hop-Based Education and Possibilities for Disruption in Teaching Economics

Abstract

The notion of the American dream is a prevalent theme within the K-12 economics curriculum. However, the realization of this dream has been elusive for many students of color. This paper utilizes a Critical Race Theory (CRT) lens to examine how preservice teachers understand and take-up Hip-Hop Based Education (HHBE) to disrupt simplistic conceptions of the American dream.
