Teacher educators aim to prepare teachers with best practices for facilitating learning. As novice teachers shift from theory to practice in their first classroom, they often encounter challenges in student learning beyond the scope of preparation (Andrews & Quinn, 2005). This is particularly true across diverse, high-need schools throughout the country. Unfortunately, novice teachers are often unaware of their role in solving students’ challenges (Burkman, 2012). This study examined novice teachers prepared using teacher inquiry, to investigate, What stories do novice teachers tell of problems of practice when accommodating diverse learners during their first year? How do they describe their challenges and approach to problems of practice? What insights do their stories glean into how teacher preparation informed their practice?
