Abstract

Researchers and advocacy groups alike have highlighted the importance of early mathematics and a cohesive PreK-8 curriculum (Bodovski & Farkas, 2007; Claesens & Engel, 2013; Claessens, Duncan, & Engel, 2009; DiPerna, Lei, & Reid, 2007; Morgan, Farkas, & Wu, 2009; NMAP, 2008; Watts, Duncan, Siegler, & Davis-Kean, 2014). Intermediate and middle grades provide a key linkage that connect early numeracy to algebra-readiness. Using a nationally representative longitudinal dataset (ECLS-K: 1999), I explore the relationship of math achievement performance between intermediate and middle grades as measured in third and eight. I find that third grade math levels are predictive of later achievement, and that mastery of multiplication and division is specifically indicative of higher achievement levels.
