This design case describes how our team redesigned an existing problem-based learning module and supporting case libraries using an online game-based approach. The manuscript explores the iterative processes of design that took place as we transitioned to an online game-based approach within the broader framework of educational design research. We present our design case as one EDR meso-cycle of analysis and exploration, design and construction, and evaluation and reflection. Furthermore, we highlight the role of conjecture maps to uncover design tensions and opportunities. Finally, we discuss the principles that guided our design processes, describe how those principles are embodied in the design of our learning environment, and explain how the design principles evolved over time.
