Video Reflection Cycles in Preservice Teacher Education

Mon, April 8, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 707

Abstract

This poster presentation describes a reflection cycle used with preservice elementary teachers iteratively throughout their educator preparation program to support their development as reflective practitioners. The reflection cycle includes viewing and annotation of one’s own teaching, peer and instructor dialogic feedback, and synthesis of the feedback to identify areas of strength, evidence of student (dis)engagement and learning, and areas for continued professional development. The details of the cycle are explained, as well as tools such as prompts, implementation logistics, and rubrics created to assess reflection as a developmental process. Additionally, artifacts from the cycles including video annotations, peer discussions, and written reflections are shared.
