Undergraduate music education majors often face challenges in trying to navigate their dual identities as teachers and performers. The purpose of this research was to examine undergraduate music teacher education curricula in the context of teacher identity formation and in comparison to teacher education curricula in “core” subjects. Results indicated that courses related to subject-area content made up the largest proportion of included music teacher education programs, and that music teacher education programs devoted a larger proportion of the curriculum to content-based courses than other teacher education programs. While scholars have called on music teacher educators to prioritize the development of a teacher identity among undergraduates, current music teacher education curricula may not be aligned with these recommendations.
