Discourses of the Mainstream Media Toward Older Women in Turkey: An Understanding of the Double Standard of Ageism

Abstract

The present study is a qualitative content analysis of Turkish mainstream media news about the murder of women from 2010-2017. A total of 80 news stories were analyzed to examine how the mainstream media in Turkey report murder news of older women. The purpose of the study is to examine the double-standard of ageism and sexism in Turkish news. Framing theory was used to inquiry the writers’ tones, reasonings, beliefs, values, and emotions in the news stories. Each story was descriptively analyzed in terms of length and organization of the story. Findings revealed that pictures of the older women were not used in the majority of the stories and attribution of responsibility frame was used more as well.
