No Place Like Home: The Gendered Consequences of Outrage on University Campuses

Sat, April 6, 10:25 to 11:55am, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Grand Centre

Abstract

This paper seeks to examine the precariousness of women’s roles in academia, and the gendered ways in which their speech and actions may be subject to suspicion. I will examine the controversy surrounding Erika Christakis' halloween costume email at Yale University using critical feminist theory such as that of Valerie Walkerdine and Iris Marion Young to explore the implications of the belief that women’s duty to nurture was and still is central to the image of an educative institution.
