Public Health, an Educational Issue: The Impact of Public Health Factors on Parental Engagement

Abstract

Public education and public health programs are intended to serve vulnerable people, improve quality of life, and close outcome gaps. However, the Trump administration has made significant cuts to these social supports. In a post-truth era where educational, health and social conditions are viewed as separate issues and negative outcomes are blamed on the individual rather than society, individuals with intersectional identities can suffer greatly. Through the use of a public health methodology – Participatory Rank Method, this paper will present ways to support a subgroup of vulnerable learners, Latinx bilingual children with dis/abilities, through school-based initiatives identified by an oft-silenced stakeholder: their undocumented Spanish-speaking mothers.
