The School Queer and Trans* Kids of Color Built: Underground Tracks Toward Polyrhythmic Educational Inquiry

Mon, April 8, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 704

Abstract

While recent liberal inclusion efforts in research and practice have increased queer and trans* of color representation in education data, extraordinary domains of queer and trans* of color thought are persistently ignored by education work. Complex queer and trans* of color frameworks with the potential to rattle the contents of educational research down to its foundations remain subdued by the orthodoxies of the discipline at large, reinforcing academically-inscribed divides between race, class, gender, sexuality, and ability. This paper explores the “hidden rhythms” of inquiry, considering the interstices of schooling’s enfleshed experience—the meeting of movement, bodies, memories, feeling, and desire. It concludes with ETAW, reimagining community and school-based education research from multiple positions of educator, artist/activist, and researcher.
