Abstract

The purpose of this study was to fill a gap in the literature concerning supports for preparing pre-service mathematics and science teachers to implement culturally-responsive pedagogy (CRP). When evident in these PSTs’ planning, CRP was largely limited in significance and cohesion and lacked important hallmarks such as incorporating multicultural content and developing K-12 students’ critical consciousness. Using CRP as a theoretical lens, the researchers sought to identify the pitfalls and successes when fourteen prospective mathematics and science teachers planned to teach in culturally responsive ways. Our findings illuminate examples of successful planning for CRP, as well as limitations and pitfalls. This work begins to develop a framework for evaluating and informing CRP coursework for pre-service mathematics and science teachers.
