Institutional and Contextual Correlates of Black Athletic Overrepresentation at Predominantly White Institutions

Abstract

Recent descriptive studies documenting Black males overrepresentation in revenue producing sports--football and basketball--at predominantly white institutions (PWIs) reflects a pattern of racialized athletic clustering (RAC). Yet, little is known about particular institutional or contextual factors that may explain the wide variation in RAC within conferences and across athletic competitive levels. To fill this knowledge gap, we create a unique database (NCAA archival data supplemented with institutional and contextual measures) to examine the impact of selected institutional and contextual factors on RAC. Logistic regression results indicate that both institutional--university academic prestige and athletic competitive level--and contextual--state educational equity policy, region--factors are associated with racialized athletic clustering (RAC). Policy implications are discussed.
