Poster #79 - Urban Secondary Mathematics Teachers Learning Culturally Relevant Teaching Practices: Lesson Planning and Reflections

Tue, April 9, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

Scholars have argued that culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) is important when teaching students of color (Ladson-Billings, 1995, 2008; Gay, 2000, 2009). Preparing secondary mathematics teachers in CRP is essential, especially since mathematics teachers often view mathematics as a culture-free discipline (Gay, 2009). This study investigates the lesson planning and reflections of secondary mathematics teachers in a methods course that was developed to situate lesson and unit planning through the lens of CRP. Most prospective teachers incorporated culturally or personally relevant topics, and discovery or exploratory mathematics lessons in their unit; however, this was more prevalent in middle-school teachers. Three teachers (out of 10) attempted social justice mathematics lessons.
