We designed an intervention with teams of pharmacy students and psychiatry residents in an inter-professional student-led smoking cessation program for eight months, as part of experiential learning. We used qualitative analysis to explore how these residents and students developed their communication and collaboration skills, with clients and inter-professionally. The success of the intervention for clients is not part of this paper. At the beginning, students and residents doubted their knowledge of smoking cessation and their ability to work inter-professionally. By the end of the study both thought they had learned from each other and had been successful at helping clients quit. They felt motivated and thought their learning had gone beyond traditional classroom teaching and simulated activities.
