Through interviews and observations this research study examines the barriers and mechanisms of exclusion in k and 1 classrooms that ultimately limit the agency of students of color. We critically examine Developmentally appropriate practices that are intended to promote child centered learning and yet this privileges white students and promotes their importance in the classroom. Additionally this work draws from critical and equity pedagogies in our effort to challenge the deficit views of students of color.
