Sociocultural Learning in a Veterinary Teaching Hospital

Abstract

In this study, we explored how the sociocultural structure of a Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) can impact student perceptions of their learning experiences. Data was analyzed using Wenger’s Community of Practice (CoP) framework for analysis (1998). We conducted observations, focus groups, and interviews during one clinical rotation within a VTH in a primary care service called Community Practice. The service embodied nearly all of the components of a CoP, but students felt excluded from the CoP and this negatively impacted their perceptions of their learning experiences. Findings can be used to improve educators’ understanding of how the sociocultural aspects of the learning environment can affect students' perceptions. Strategies can be developed to increase student perceptions of belonging to a CoP.
