Abstract

Culturally relevant pedagogy(CRP) has been utilized in mathematics teacher preparation, professional development, and teacher resources, although often, teacher express trepidation about implementing the pedagogy in their classrooms. This qualitative research study based on interviews of in-service secondary mathematics teachers in an urban setting focuses on the experiences of teachers as they implement CRP practices in their classrooms. Findings from this study illuminate the barriers, such as emotions like guilt, and pathways to perseverance, such as high student engagement, for math teachers in implementing CRP.
