Abstract

Asian Americans’ upward mobility is usually depicted as a model minority and masked by aggregated data, which neglects diversity among Asian Americans. The primary purpose of this study is to examine differences in social mobility by Asian subgroups across generations and the social stratification within Asian American communities. A multiple case study is used in order to gain in-depth knowledge and understanding of social mobility and stratification by Asian subgroups. The total number of participants is fifteen; five East Asians, five Filipinos, five Pacific Islanders, five South Asians, and five Southeast Asians. A semi-structured in-depth interview is employed in this study. The study primarily expects that there will be a pattern of intergenerational social mobility and stratification by Asian subgroups.
