A more holistic analysis of student experiences in dual-language immersion reveals inequitable academic and cultural outcomes between culturally and linguistically diverse students and their White peers (de Jong & Howard, 2009). I posit that closer attention to the role of dual-language principals will shed light on the past and present trajectory of DLI and, potentially, reasons for this opportunity gap. This review of research provides a synthesis of studies of leadership, thus far, in DLI and bilingual contexts. Four leadership themes arise from analysis including: DLI leaders as program advocates, program experts, social justice proponents and shared leadership. This review concludes by calling for more attention to the cultural component of DLI programs and the culture-building practices of school leaders.
