A Closer Look: Strengths-Based Portraits of Culturally Diverse Families Involved in American Special Education

Abstract

Despite being federally mandated, family engagement in special education does not occur for all families, especially culturally diverse families. Using portraiture research methods, we collaboratively examined the experiences of three Asian American families involved in American special education. We developed co-constructed portrait narratives of each family that are written to counter deficit views of children with disabilities and culturally diverse families. Data collection included naturalistic observations with families, semi-structured interviews, guest presentations with pre-service educators, and document review. Data were analyzed inductively utilizing the constant comparative method. By looking closely at these families, learning from these mothers, and using universities as access points to democratize information from first-hand experiences, we intend to improve understanding of culturally diverse families.
