Assessing Creativity: Exploring the Relationships Among Self-Assessment, Teacher Ratings, and Divergent Thinking Tests

Abstract

There are many ways to assess creativity. The most commonly used measures of creativity include divergent thinking tests and a variety of self-report instruments. In the meantime, teacher rating has been playing an increasingly important role in selecting creative students. However, the relationships among various creativity assessment approaches have not been extensively examined. This study shows that different methods are not equally effective in measuring students’ creativity. Fluency scores generated by a DT test provide the least amount of information, and self-assessment and teacher ratings seem to perform better. However, the convergent validity evidence was only obtained within each assessment framework, and teacher ratings tend to favor girls and White students.
