Material Culture in the History of Curriculum

Mon, April 8, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Osgoode Ballroom

Abstract

Hence, the history of a school as a historical construction, the product of a multifactorial process is founded in two paradigms: one essentially external paradigm and another internal paradigm. Focusing the internal paradigm, this paper intends to explain the potential of writing the history of curriculum based in the material culture that supports the curricular practices. Our data sources were the government representative report from 1956 of a Brazilian secondary school. Even considering the need of deeper analyses we conclude that the objects listed in the report, showed in the photography, or the objects it selves raise the conclusion that the school followed the recommendations of the educational authorities, shaping its prescript curriculum to be accepted by the official bureau.
