Ph.D. Students Learn to Think Creatively and Critically Through a Practical Research Project Within a Theoretical Research Course

Abstract

Providing opportunities for doctoral students to think creatively and critically within authentic learning experiences can be challenging, especially in theoretical courses. We taught first and second year students advanced research methodologies. For one assignment we had students engage in practical research experiences where they collected personal data that was relevant to them, and create visualizations of data in addition to written analysis. Our purpose was for students to experience the day-to-day logistics of a research project, thinking creatively and critically, and to be part of an academic community. According to the students, completing the project increased their self-confidence and competence as researchers. As instructors we agreed and thought the students came to know themselves as emerging researchers.
