BAD HOMBRES Co-Creating Testimonios: Navigating, Negotiating, and Sobreviviendo Graduate School to Transform the Academy

Abstract

In this paper, we disrupt the misconceived notions of Latinidad in the U.S. by composing narratives of resistance and resilience through our lived experiences. Together, our stories reflect the nuance of the Latino experience in the United States and unsettle the notion of the apathetic Latinos. We articulate our schooling and familial trajectory that led us to UT in hopes that others can learn how to forge their own path in US institutions and so that we too, can begin the healing process. Our research draws on previous co-created testimonios (Carrillo & Mendez, 2016). To tell our story, we use community cultural wealth (Yosso, 2005), Ventajas (Rendon, Nora, & Kanagala, 2014), and Border Thinking (Mignolo & Tlostanova, 2006).
