Racialized Teacher Educators' Voices and Reflections: An International Service-Learning Experience in Tanzania

Mon, April 8, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 703

Abstract

In these turmoil-filled political times the few racialized teacher educators that exist in teacher education need to be heard as they contribute to the landscape of helping peer teacher educators understand the entrenched and pervasive role of race in today. Two racialized teacher educators took 18 teacher candidates to Tanzania for a critical service learning practicum. This paper uses critical race theory to examine the teacher educators journal entries and how their racial identities were perceived and understood. Thus, we invite a conversation in teacher education that acknowledges the value of racialized teacher educators and their perspectives on how teacher education can better challenge the status quo of racialized identity that often gets unconsciously reinforced in teacher education programs.
