Responding to Dysconscious Ableism and Performative Accessibility: Disability Activism in (Neoliberal) Higher Education

Mon, April 8, 4:10 to 5:40pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

In this paper, we consider the broad question: Why is there still disability activism after decades of legislation mandating a framework of social justice and human rights for addressing the needs of disabled individuals (Guillaume, 2011). More specifically, why do disabled students feel that disability activism is necessary in contemporary higher education? We approached this question symptomatically, exploring what the continuing need for student activism signifies.
