The use of telemetry data to measure student learning has great potential in the area of educational games. Telemetry refers to the design and logging of user interactions in an application, game or other digital resource. Well-designed telemetry, accurate data collection, and correlations with observed student behavior can be a critical component to developing learning games that provide meaningful insights into learning. This paper describes recent innovations in testing the accuracy of an educational game focused on map skills for K-2 children developed by Twin Cities PBS and funded by the USDOE Ready to Learn Grant. Learnings from this work can be applied to help learning game designers focus their telemetry on behaviors that reflect the skills games are targeting.
