Place and Community based education view the cultural, social and ecological assets in a community as a foundation for engaging students in authentic meaningful learning. This paper examines the impact of engaging pre-service teachers in a place-based collaboration on their perceptions of the school and the community. While the experience did have a positive impact on the pre-service teachers’ perception of the students and the teachers, it reinforced a deficit model of thinking about the school and the community. This paper examines pre-service teachers’ reflections to identify ways of unpacking and challenging their deficit perspectives of urban communities and schools.
