Understanding Representations of Food Security Through Environmental Education Curricula

Abstract

Based on document reviews, this paper presents representations of the topic of food security in selected Ministry of Ontario curriculum documents through ways of thinking that are reflective of anthropocentrism and community-centered aspects. Analyzing the curriculum documents with a focus on language allowed for a deeper understanding of how the topic of food security could be interpreted at the classroom level. This study suggests that in order to garner a holistic snapshot of the topic, an interdisciplinary approach is needed to fully create new ways of thinking and understanding of food security.
