The purpose of this study, which is one component of a larger study, was to investigate teacher perceptions of the use of literacy-based approaches in mathematics instruction. Five teachers integrated picture books into their mathematics instruction to determine if these methods could meet the demands of effective mathematics instruction for economically-, culturally-, and linguistically-minoritized students in the primary grades. Using conversational focus group interviews and reflective journaling, the teachers indicated that picture books were an effective pedagogical technique that provided their students with an authentic learning experience. Moreover, although none of the teachers were literacy educators, they found the implementation of picture books easier than they expected. Finally, the teachers noticed positive changes in student engagement and motivation.
