Leveraging the Perspectives of Novice Teachers to Reenvision Elementary Teacher Preparation

Tue, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

This study explored the perceptions of novice teachers and graduates of a large, urban university, in order to engage in program renewal. Exit surveys were conducted at the conclusion of the final semester, and semi-structured surveys were completed as students began a new school year. The findings suggest that the participants in this study struggled to apply learning across contexts and included disparate understandings of classroom management as a discrete set of skills. Recommendations for more systematic integration of clinical experiences and campus coursework are shared.
