Critical Imaginations and Navigation of Equitable Science Pathways

Fri, April 5, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

Access to STEM-rich practices within the context of low-income urban schools are few and far between. Additionally, having the opportunity to engage in STEM in after-school settings may also be a limited possibility without the support and resources needed to implement such practices. This paper, centered on the experiences of Nila, a performing arts student engaging in STEM-rich making, provides a narrative of the ways in which a Black girl has engaged in a critical race praxis through her making in an after-school program directed at equity in STEM.
