A Visual Measure of Science Identity: Instrument Development Pilot

Sun, April 7, 9:55 to 11:25am, Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine Level, Confederation 3

Abstract

Science identify refers to a person’s internal vision of themselves as a scientist. This study presents findings from a pilot test of the new Visual Test of Science Identity (VTSI); a visual test or assessment of science identity targeting gender and ethnicity/race beliefs. While less-targeted instruments already exist, this rigorous development approach may better control for extraneous variables when measuring science identity. Results indicate the VTSI was notably different than previous instruments which contained science iconography. Of note, boys and men thought photos of males depicted scientists more often than girls and women thought photos of females depicted scientists. Findings and their implications are discussed.
