"Teachers Are Marginalized Laborers": New Teacher Perceptions of Evaluation During Student Teaching Through Year 1

Abstract

Teacher evaluation is one among several efforts meant to efficiently manage, measure, and control the work of teachers. This presentation shares the results of analysis of case study interview data collected as a part of a larger study of teacher perceptions of evaluation during their student teaching semester and first year of teaching. Findings indicate that, while some teachers accepted accountability narratives into their perceptions of evaluation, others were critical of such reforms and the role of corporate actors in high stakes teacher evaluation. Teacher perceptions related to both the edTPA and Danielson Framework are discussed. Findings from this study are relevant to our understanding of new teacher socialization and the impact of measurement-oriented teacher evaluation tools.
