This collective case studies were conducted using home and community observations, interviews with children, and children-created drawings and writing to explore young children’s emerging literate identities in immigrant families. Drawing on sociocultural perspectives on literacy and identity, this paper examines the texts that emergent bilingual children read, write, and discuss in out-of-school contexts and the attitudes and values they describe in relation to these texts in order to explore how their out-of-school literacy practices embody their emerging literate identities.
