Abstract

As a means of addressing bias against African American English-speakers that is prevalent within the ethos of too many educators, this presentation aims to challenge Speech- Language Pathologists to reconceptualize their roles in schools and classrooms. This paper is presented from the perspective of teacher educators who observe inequities in classrooms associated with teachers’ misperceptions of AAE. These observations have resulted in a call for SLPs to intensify their roles in schools from informed professionals to advocates for AAE.
