Black Girls and Women in K–12 Educational Settings: A Content Analysis of Publications in Selected Journals

Abstract

The purpose of this content analysis was to systematically review and evaluate existing empirical studies on the educational experiences of Black girls and women in K-12 settings. This study examined trends and patterns regarding (a) publication frequency, (b) methodology representation, (c) participant characteristics, and (d) empirical focus. An exhaustive search through selective journals for pertinent articles yielded 39 relevant studies. The results indicated that Black girls and women were represented in less than 1% of the educational literature. Moreover, Black males were represented approximately 5 times more than Black girls and women. Finally, this study explicates that the experiences of Black girls and women are not analogous to their male or White female peers and provides implications for further research.
