Perceptions of Transformation and Quality in Higher Education: A Case Study of Ph.D. Student Experiences

Abstract

In most areas of higher education, governments have begun putting in place mechanisms to monitor and support quality. Recently, the definition of quality gaining traction in the scholarly community is that of quality as enhancement and transformation (Harvey & Newton, 2007). This study sought to examine student perceptions of transformation and quality and the extent to which PhD students are living the intended transformation that academic programs are seeking to foster. Using a nested multiple case study design, Seidman’s (1998) three-stage interview protocol served as primary source of data. Implications for institutional policies and practice are associated with the structuring and implementation of supervision protocols and quality assurance frameworks.
