This longitudinal, qualitative study examines student perceptions of success and well-being over the first year of college by utilizing Seifert’s (2016) “cubic” model of success that incorporates well-being rather than solely relying on completion rates and earnings capacity. Two surveys were administered to first-year students in the fall and spring semesters. Open ended responses were analyzed and interrelated themes were developed: fulfillment, accomplishment, contentment, freedom, achievement, and discontent. Preliminary results indicate that although students see college as a pathway to career and financial security, their definitions of success are broader, encompassing the importance of interpersonal relationships, achieving personal goals, and finding happiness in their lives.
