Applying the Generalist Intervention Model to K–12 Education in Detroit

Abstract

This paper evaluates the perceived K – 12 education crisis in Detroit, Michigan from the standpoint of the Generalist Intervention Model (GIM). The GIM is a framework used to plan change with an individual or system, which proceeds by: understanding the problem; conducting an assessment; initiating actions to achieve the goals of the system; implementing preventative measures; and analyzing and monitoring interventions (Lee, 2016). The content of this paper comes from a literature review, public records from Detroit schools, a media analysis, and data from the School Funding Fairness Data System and Urban Institute indicators. A policy-centered approach is used to assess current interventions and explore potential solutions to achieve a sustainable school system that provides quality education throughout Detroit.
