Research and Practice: Developmental Evaluation of a Collaborative Inquiry to Support Parent Engagement in Mathematics

Tue, April 9, 8:00 to 9:30am, Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine Level, Confederation 3

Abstract

This study investigates developmental evaluation (DE) and collaborative inquiry (CI) as approaches, which promote reciprocity in research and practice. Specifically, we investigate lessons learned when DE and CI are used for promoting parent engagement in mathematics. Promoting parent engagement in mathematics learning is one of the four overarching goals of the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Renewed Mathematic Strategy. Research into promoting parent engagement in mathematics using DE and CI supports the exploration of contextual needs as well as specific the practices and methods that subsequently meet those needs. By reporting results of an 18-month study we respond to and reflect on what can be gained when school and university communities work together in pursuit of ongoing and improved learning.
